The difference between Beni Ouarain and Azilal rugs

All our rugs are handwoven in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

These two types of rugs are made in the Moroccan mountains of the Middle Atlas. One in the Azilal region, hence the name Azilal rug. The other in the Béni Ouarain region, hence the name Béni Ouarain rug. Each region has its own specificities in terms of sunlight, temperatures, and vegetation. The sheep raised there also have different characteristics adapted to the climate of their region. For example, the wool of the sheep from the Béni Ouarain region is very white. The wool from the Azilal region tends more towards beige. Azilal rugs and Béni Ouarain rugs are among the highest quality Berber rugs. Indeed, the wool used is virgin, meaning it comes from shearing a living sheep and not a sick or dead one.

Another difference between Béni Ouarain and Azilal rugs can be seen in the patterns. The designs depicted on Berber rugs represent the weaver's life at the time of making. Symbols of fertility, religion, protection, and nature are very often represented. On Béni Ouarain rugs, which are mostly black and white Berber rugs, the patterns are quite minimalist and graphically represented. Azilal rugs, on the other hand, are more intricate. They can be colorful Berber rugs or black and white. The region, colors, and patterns are the three main elements that differentiate Béni Ouarain and Azilal rugs and will help you distinguish them.
