The Berber carpet, a must-have for contemporary decoration

Much more than just a carpet, a Berber carpet is a work of art: hand-woven according to ancestral knowledge by the nomadic tribes of Morocco, it adds character to your home. It blends modernity and authenticity thanks to premium quality natural materials, and sober geometric patterns or shimmering colours. Moroccan rugs are loaded with symbolism: they often relate key elements in the life of the Berber weaver, conveying strong, positive messages.

What is a Berber carpet?

The Berber carpet is a Moroccan carpet hand-woven by the women of the Atlas tribes. Each Berber tribe has developed its own unique know-how to create carpets that are like no other: Boucherouite, Azilal, Kilim, Boujad or Beni Ouarain, you'll find the very essence of this know-how in our Them online shop. Dive into the history of the Berber carpet with us. In pure wool, in recycled fabric, shaggy with long or short pile, white and black or coloured: the oriental carpet is seducing more and more fans thanks to its multiplicity. The traditional Berber carpet is the result of meticulous handwork by the people of North Africa. With its unique pile structure, it is of high quality, with strong strands that stand the test of time. Berber Moroccan rugs are extremely hard-wearing and easy to care for. The wool is dense, soft and comfortable.

The different types of Berber rugs

If you want to buy a traditional Berber carpet, you need to choose a model that respects the ancestral techniques and know-how of the nomadic Moroccan tribes. Each tribe makes rugs that reflect the climate, the environment and their traditions. Choose between black and white Berber carpets or coloured Berber carpets:

Béni Ouarain rugs: handmade rugs from Morocco, they are made from very high quality natural wool. Generally white in colour, they are decorated with brown or black geometric motifs such as triangles or diamonds.

The Kilim rug: this oriental woven rug is made from pure sheep's wool. Its traditional design is based on looms that have been in use for almost 10,000 years.

Azilal rugs: these Moroccan woollen rugs originate in southern Morocco. These are light-coloured woollen carpets with a variety of colourful motifs, often representing strong symbols for the Berber tribe or weaver.

The Boucherouite carpet: this carpet is woven from textile fabric and is generally made from cotton, nylon or synthetic materials. It takes meticulous work by the weavers to produce a quality carpet.

A Berber carpet from Morocco is a unique piece of decoration for your home. Whether you opt for a Beni Ouarain rug in pure wool or a Boucherouite rug in recycled cotton, it will add chic and elegance to your home. The Moroccan Berber carpet is far from being just another rug: hand-woven by Berber women in the Atlas mountains, it is the testimony of an ancestral art and know-how passed down from generation to generation. Its symbols have travelled around the world and can be adapted to any interior. In a bohemian chic or industrial decor, it will enhance your furniture. As a wall covering or floor covering, it's a stylish and original touch in your bedroom, living room or hallway. Each rug is unique: the designs vary according to the inspiration and creativity of the weaver. Moroccan rugs: versatile and easy to care for

A Berber rug is representative of the traditions of nomadic peoples, but it must also meet the requirements of its future (and happy) owners. A Berber rug is perfect for living rooms with plenty of space for all your family. Easy to care for, this ethnic decorative element is halfway between oriental and contemporary styles. There are Moroccan rugs to suit all tastes and sizes. Although the most traditional models are often longer than they are wide, they come in a wide range of sizes to meet the needs of modern interiors. A Boucherouite rug is chic and elegant, while a Beni Ouarain rug is more discreet. Azilal Berber rugs are renowned for their colourful designs. So you're spoilt for choice between a single-colour Berber carpet, one with a duality of colours (such as black and white) or one with brighter tones such as bluepink or yellow.
